L'histoire d'ABBA commence en 1966 avec la rencontre des 2 B : Björn Ulvaeus et Benny Andersson. Les deux avaient déjà commencé quelques collaborations dans différents groupes suédois.
Ils commencent très vite à écrire des chansons ensemble et deviennent un duo complice de compositeur. En 1969, ils rencontrent chacun leur future fiancée et surtout la deuxième partie d'ABBA, les 2 A : Agnetha Fältskog et Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida).
Un an plus tard, ils se rendent compte de l'harmonie de leurs quatre voix et décident de créer un groupe : Festfolk. Les premiers essais sont mitigés mais le groupe persiste et en 1972, "People Need Love" connaît un beau succès en Suède.
Encouragés, ils participent à l'Eurovision en 1973 avec "Ring, Ring" qui finit troisième. L'année suivante, ils réitèrent l'expérience et cette fois, ils arrivent premiers avec Waterloo et surtout en utilisant leur nouveau nom : ABBA.
Cette victoire à l’Eurovision a permis à Abba de se faire connaître et surtout de placer leur hit à la première place des charts européens et même américains mais cette victoire est à double tranchant car ils n’ont pas été pris au sérieux et ont eu du mal à imposer leurs autres chansons de suite.
Il faut attendre 18 mois pour les revoir en haut de l’affiche avec leur troisième album qui fournit des tubes comme SOS ou Mamma Mia. C’est donc à partir de 1976 qu’ils s’imposent comme l’un des groupes les plus populaires de la planète.
Dancing Queen, Money Money, Knowing me Knowing you, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)… sont désormais des chansons incontournables et malgré la séparation des deux couples, le groupe continue sur sa lancée et se produit jusqu’au Japon.
Mais en 1982, la flamme des débuts n’est plus là et le groupe décide de faire un break alors que chacun envisage une carrière solo. Dans les années 90, nostalgie aidant, ABBA fait son « revival » : anthologies, comédie musicale Mamma Mia, DVD et anniversaire de leur victoire à l’Eurovision il y a 30 ans déjà !
